The AVOID study supports the results of the EssentiAL trial showing that the use of ICG in rectosigmoid resections, and, more broadly, in left sided resections, can significantly decrease the rate of anastomotic leakage. Although Faber and colleagues did not find a significant difference in anastomotic leakage rates across all surgeries, the inclusion of right-sided colectomies, which might have an inherently lower risk of anastomotic leakage, could have diluted the effect of ICG in the overall analysis. It remains unknown whether ICG could also reduce the risk of anastomotic leakage in right-sided colectomies.
