Acute cholecystitis (AC) is a prevalent global acute abdomen with an increasing incidence, primarily attributed to calculous AC, which accounts for over 95% of cases. It ranks among the most common causes of emergency surgical visits. Various guidelines and consensus statements emphasize tailoring AC treatment based on its severity grade, taking into account the hospital’s expertise in surgery, intervention, and endoscopy. Patients with complicated AC are often referred to higher-level teaching hospitals or dedicated emergency surgery centers.
This study aims to explore the roles of ICG cholangiography (ICGC) for the young surgeons in performing ELC for AC patients. As the national emergency surgery center in Peking Union Medical College Hospital, we manage a diverse range of AC patients with complex conditions. From August 1st, 2023 to February 1st, 2024, a specialized team comprising 4 young surgeons (1 chief surgeon and 3 assistants) was prospectively assigned to undertake all AC patient treatments by adopting a proactive attitude toward ELC with ICGC.
This prospective single-arm cohort study from a single surgical team shows that ECL with ICGC procedure could be potentially helpful for the young surgeons to perform on complex AC patients.
